Seeking New  Executive  Director (ED)


Rockbridge Area Transportation System (RATS) is seeking a full-time Executive Director (ED) to manage the operation of a transportation nonprofit organization in Rockbridge and Alleghany Counties. Based in Lexington, Virginia, RATS has provided safe and affordable, door-to-door transportation for those with and without disabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Board Governance

    • Provide clear communication to the Board regarding organization’s goals, challenges, financials, and personnel.
    • Act as the conduit for information exchange between the Board and other Staff. 
    • Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
    • Collaborate with the Board to ensure RATS has a multi-year strategic plan, implemented in a timely manner.

  • Fiscal & Financial Oversight

    • Oversee financial and accounting activities with a focus on sustainability and growth.
    • Work with Staff and Board in preparing a budget, and ensure the organization operates within budget guidelines.
    • Develop and maintain sound financial and transparent practices and controls.

  • Fundraising & Development

    • Spearhead fundraising strategies to drive financial growth.
    • Develop and implement creative fundraising initiatives.
    • Oversee the preparation and submission of grant applications and reports.
    • Cultivate relationships with major donors, corporate partners, and grant-making organizations.

  • Operations

    • Ensure effective operations, including vehicle fleet management and scheduling.
    • Uphold compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; ensure that RATS maintains official records and documents.
    • Conduct recruitment, training, employment, and release of all personnel in an efficient manner that follows RATS human resource policies and practices as well as Virginia State Law.
    • Ensure RATS uses relevant technology and systems to effectively store information and communicate.
    • Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.

  • Leadership & Management

    • Effectively lead staff and foster an inclusive, success-oriented, accountable environment.
    • Coordinate with medical organizations, insurance brokers, vendors, and local, state & federal governments.
    • Lead the development and implementation of RATS’ strategic direction; identify and communicate priorities in support of the mission and goals; manage resources and operations successfully.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with various organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance RATS’ mission.

  • Reporting Structure

    • Reports directly to the Board of Directors
    • Leads a team of five office staff and 15 drivers

Compensation:

  • Salary

    • $45,000 - $55,000 based on experience
    • Annual incentive bonus available

Qualifications:

  • Education

    • Bachelor’s degree
  • Skills & Abilities

    • Exceptional and proven manager of people and programming, with attention to detail 
    • Highly motivated self-starter and problem solver with a strong work ethic, and a demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships
    • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and stakeholders
    • Proven track record of successful resource development, including fundraising, and donor relations
    • Working knowledge of nonprofit financial management and budgeting
    • Proficiency in MS Office Suite; familiarity with Quick Books a plus

  • Travel

    • Requires some limited travel in Virginia and District of Columbia

Start date on or before May 1, 2025, to allow for sufficient overlap with the current ED.
